Heads Up – Missing In Action

Posted August 19th, 2005 in Travel by M

I’m off out of the country again. This time I’m not stepping across the border, but will be crossing several borders. Unlike some people who we will not name (like Chris Murungaru), the Government where I’m going does not object to my “conduct, character and associations” and will let me in.

I’ve spent the entire week applying for a passport (hence the silence). To pry a passport out of the cheap, unwilling fingers of the Kenyan government requires 30 working days if you are lucky. Seeing as I had just under a week, molehills and mountains had to be moved, oceans parted and multitudes had to be fed with five loaves and two fish, a tale for another day. Fascinating fact: Even if you’re dying the best they can do is one week!

Suffice it to say if I see an indefatigable car labelled KACA indefatigably pulling up at the office gates I will surreptitiously effect a silent, ninja-like exit from my office window and lower myself to the ground with my shoelaces because they undoubtedly would be anxious to have a word with me over the events of the week.

In my back pocket is a shiny new passport I secured in exactly 22 hours and 34 minutes. The yellow fever vaccine has left me feeling like I have ran two marathons back to back. I ache in places I didn’t know I had.

Anyway, I will be in Gaborone, Botswana for a couple of weeks. If I can convince my camera to work I’ll see what I can do when I intentionally get lost in the streets of Gaborone. After life in Kenya’s system ya majambazi I dare say I can survive. As for blogging I can’t promise anything so try not to get them voodoo effigies of me and drive pins into them!

Botswana is the country over which my Representative (Ernest Istook)and I became “enemies.”

See, they’ve got this AIDS epidemic. They also have the worlds largest/most productive diamond mine. They also have a fiat currency that their central bank inflates at about 9.5%.

My question to Istook, which I not only hand delivered to his office (which is right across the street from the largest bank in town) but also attempted to hand deliver to HIM at his campaign headquarters, was “Why is the United States paying Botswana $15,000,000,000 in aid for AIDS when a boat load of pant zippers and condems will do just as good and cost less?” All I got in return was an icy silence.

Congressman Jim Inhofe’s office at least answered me by saying that it is the US’s moral obligation to do so. While this latter is argueable, as the ground shakes in Valhalla Cemetary in New York City because Ayn Rand is turning over and over in her grave, I noticed something else:

Not only does the diamond mine, which is owned by de Beers, produce about 19 carats per annum per every man, woman, and child in Botswana, if my calculations are correct, but… inflation is outpacing GDP expansion by an amout similar to the moneys the US taxpayers are sending Botswana for AIDS research/prevention.

Never mind the diamonds or the AIDS. The money is all going to the coffers at the UN’s IMF.

    …Have a nice trip.

“Seeing as I had just under a week, molehills and mountains had to be moved, oceans parted and multitudes had to be fed with five loaves and two fish, a tale for another day.”

So, You can bribe after all? Then let Murungaru steal from the public coffers in peace! You and him are all the same!

Reminds me of the saying: “I will be the last to do A,B,C.” I suppose you are the last.

On a friendly note: You won’t get lost in the streets of Gaborone- those people are organized. I have been there, and liked it.

It is like where I live: Today I will take a beer in “Zanzibar bar” (-sounds repetitive-) in down town Manhattan, and I promise you I will get home to “Queens”.

    Enjoy your stay.

    * I have to give it to “Nyayo Hse” or is it “Times Tower” nowadays? Kusema kweli they have really improved….even if its a month, most of the people i know that have tried getting a passport since the new system….have patad it in a month (not withstanding the red tape though)

    * Bots …. all i can say is be “CREATIVE” in a week you can discover the whole country and fall into sudden BOREDOM coz its so small and there isnt too much to do……the people are party animals tho if thats gud for you….

Just dont do a road trip, you will have to pass through a cattle dip to enter their border free from foot and mouth ….

How did you cross the border to the land of matoke without a passport? Is the EA Community really alive and well?

  • Anonymous

That is exactly what I was thinking! You didnt need a passport for the land of matoke?

You can go to uganda or tanzania with a document called a temporary permit. These are sourced from Nyayo house and they can be gotten in one day. They’re good for a year
