This Blogging Thing

Posted October 5th, 2005 in Reflections by M

Perhaps I should have used a smaller font, and possibly a light grey colour, to say that I am considering (note: considering) taking a break from this blogging thing. That this has not been a welcome announcement would be an understatement.

M at blog
M at blog

After the outrage, threats on my person and pleas  the most common question is why am I considering this and I’d not even a year old. This would be as good a time as any for a step into history.

Back Then

True, this blog was started precisely on January 1st 2005. I uploaded my 120th post last week.

The history has been chequered indeed. Right now am running on wordpress on my own domain.

Today
Homo Sapiens

I used to be on blogger, and besides the annoying URL, flexibility was acutely wanting.

On Blogger
Homo Erectus

What you may or may not know is that Thinker’s Room did not come to life this year, nor was it a blog when it came into existence. It was a webzine of sorts that came to life in mid 2001. Yes, 2001. The first couple of issues are forever lost (didn’t occur to me to archive them) but the first archived issue is me Venting on the rain and Kenyans, and a thoroughly unfair look at family ties” in Nov 16 2001. After a run of 4 years I decided to go the blog earlier this year way chiefly because:

  • It was a considerable pain to do updates, because I quite literally had to do everything – layout, design, content, etc
  • It was rather hard to get feedback

Original Thinker's Room
Homo Habilis

What still fewer of you know is that before Thinker’s Room I had something else online in 1999. And no I’m not giving you the URL for love or for money, but here is a doctored screenshot. If you remember it keep it to yourself! This is what actually got my feet wet with regards to this whole online business, in the good old days when there was no Google and the biggest online names were Yahoo and Excite

The Grandfather
Australopithecus

What even fewer of you know is that my first online anything was way back in 1997 when I did some work for a company called Form-Net, that now I think is called KenyaWeb.

This means that I have been online in some way or the other for some 9 or so years.

Of Blogging

I’ve been asked repeatedly why I blog. I’ve thought about it myself on occasion, and explored the web a bit to see why people blog. Or rather what they say when asked why they blog.

Personally, I think “why do you blog” is a very vague question. In my view it is actually two questions:

  1. Why do you write?
  2. Why do you blog?

They are totally different things. There are many people who write very well and do not blog. And I am sorry to say there are are even more people who blog and cannot write. They are not the same thing.

Why do I write?

Because I like writing and have been doing it since I was in primary school. I have several dozen assorted essays and stories and novellas lying around in the crib.

Why do I blog?

I blog because I like telling stories. My kicks are from the knowledge that something I have said has been well received. It’s a lot like stand up comedy. Once you’ve dropped that joke and the audience is in stitches then that right there is the high you’ve been looking for. That drives you to up your game still more.

Seeing that this is an online medium, I can’t really tell your reactions to anything I’ve written so the only way I can know is if you let me know. Some of you know me in person and tell me in person. Some of you email me. And some of you leave comments. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what gives me the drive to

  1. Write
  2. Put it online

In summary – I will blog as long as I know I am striking a chord, and there is no way I can know that unless you pick your poison and let me know.

Pie A La Email

Pie A La Comment

And this is why I take issue with ‘the silent ones’ who ‘keep in the background’ and have never leave a comment or drop an email. I mean really, what does it cost you? It’s just one click, and I don’t have any rules or regulations – even LOL is perfectly acceptable. You have complete carte balance (unless of course you’re trying to sell me things to enlarge other things, or you have money that you’d like me to hold on behalf of your deceased dictator husband). Otherwise I welcome all feedback, including constructive critique!

For all those who keep a brother going — a thousand thank yous. In case you don’t know yourselves one forthcoming post will leave you in little doubt.

As long as I feel I’d still striking a chord I’ll keep blogging. When I feel I’m not — well … all good things must come to an end. Until I get round to evolving x-ray vision I’ll work with that is available to me.

But that’s just me – I’m quirky like that.

AOB
I’ve decided not to take that break quite yet after all :)

AOAOB
I enjoyed the eclipse by using very high tech, cutting edge technology – looking through the side of a coffee mug. It was an amazing sight indeed, and testament to the power of the sun too!

  • donworry

I’m a newcomer here and to be honest I was praying sana that you’d take that break so that I can play catchup with all your posts. It now seems that I will have to quit my job to give me enough time to read all your stuff. It’s a boring job anyway and my soon to be fiancee’s step-dad is an ex- aide de camp to a deceased ex dictator or so I’ve heard.

:)) In that case I can make an exception and keep the money for you!

May you keep blogging for years to come

    Hopefully … :D
  • http://prousette.blogspot.com prousette

    Yipeee!!! Yay!!!
As one of those who take comfort in knowing “there’s a world out here after all” at the other end of the screeen, good to know you shall still be on when I check.
You do not need xray vision, trust me. We all look really hideous without the flesh padding.

True … there’s something about the liver in particular that is most unsettling! :-&
  • Dorine

Am happy that you have decided not to take a break. Your blog just spices up my day! Thanks and keep it up!

    :)
  • Jean

9 years? Damn!!!! You clearly are in the running to being Kenya’s Web Godfather. Or Webfather. Yes, WebfatherTM

    I’m not thaaat old!

As one of the guilty ones who stay in the background :”> I promise to come out into the light :)

… said the spider to the fly! ;)
  • http://kenyanpundit.com Kenyan Pundit

Yeah!!!! Glad you’ll be around for a little while longer.

    The power of vox pop!
  • lk

You ARE striking a chord M. Lots of chords in fact. Make that MUSIC! But you can’t have a song full of strong chords, that would be too much yeah? Keep up the great work and posts, otherwise my RSS feed to this blog will start getting lazy :D

I shall certainly break my back neck finger — er — something trying.
  • Chebz

Well – I am trully one one of those who has really stayed in the background. Since I discovered that people were blogging! (just beginning of this year), I have looked at every last one of your articles. What better way to get a feel for what is going on out there (in africa that is…). Half the time I am too gobsmacked to say anything and lost for words but will make an effort to start talking….all is not lost. Continua!!

:)) Thanks. Right there i’ve decided I must insert ‘gobsmacked’ into my everyday vocabulary!
  • Wambui

    Hooray!

    He’s sticking around!

    HAPPY! HAPPY! JOY! JOY!

    :-)

    :D
  • http://ajkenswi.blogspot.com Adrian

    nice to hear!

now if only it was that easy to convince some people TO STOP doing what they’re doing. i don’t know, some people with power…

I imagine you mean those Oompa Loompas, trolls and goblins who infest the August House … I wish there was a way to stop them too!
  • http://guessaurus.com Guess

*Doing a little victory dance here* Hi M – Yippeeeeeee. Like, like the fact that you are staying on! NINE YEARS? (should I join Jean in saying something to the effect: How old are you?) OK, I will leave it ;)

Me? Am like a good story – timeless :D

Anyway, all those Homos :) led to this – and we like this here treehouse and will keep climbing up to pick on (the brains of) the owner.

And just what will I use after you have picked everything? Note to everyone: resist the temptation to follow this particular line of thought with regards to brains!

PS: Did not get to catch the eclipse :( – it was overcast in London (insert jealous teeth-smacking sound here) but there was a picture in the papers of a Maasai clad dude in Kenya using some stained-mirror thingy to view it (ok, I have no explanation of why it had to be a maasai, but hey! *shrug*)

Oh yes I caught it. After welder’s glass became so popular I was forced to up my game and make use of cutting edge technologies B-) — discovered that I could watch the eclipse through the side of my coffee mug
  • http://udi-m.blogspot.com Udi

u talked about Form Net and you reminded me that I was one of their customers in 97. They used to charge me 4500 a month to provide me with internet acess for half a day. Call it a rip off.

:)) The sweet smell of history ….

Ur blog is chonjo. I have been following it every since u had it on Yahoo. And I can see u no longer post on Mashada

Either i’m too old or Mashada is a pale shadow of what it used to be, discussionwise. Personally i’m inclined to think the latter
  • Adi

I am happy you are not “leaving us” (insert sigh of joy here)

    :D
  • I

M, don’t be scared, we love to read your stories.. at least i know i do.
    glad you are staying!

    :D
  • http://blog.uhuru.de jke

Hehe…isn’t there something out there which goes by the name “Web Archive”? Ati? I think I do in fact remember that “doctored” website….that is, when I first went online in October 1996, there were like 7-10 websites on the net about KENYA. The CIA world factbook, RCBowen’s site, some school alumni sites and some tourist galleries.

    We’ve come a long way!

I took that chance back then to create a website for the German School Nairobi, later on adding it to the Kuzungukazunguka Kenya Webring and actually ran that school site just until before the elections when those guys at the school figured that something like uhuru.de/dsn (dsn = deutsche schule Nbo) would NOT be so nice to have as this Kenyatta guy named Uhuru came into limelight. Ayaaa…did I ever know before that he would come back and join politics? Anyways, I then got them their own domain and soon after that quit and left their website business up to them.
What I am trying to get at is: it is VERY nice to see Kenya becoming more and more represented online, we’ve seen cybercafés comming up and yes, it somehow makes me proud to see this evolution and then when I see that the Kenyan blogosphere is said to be the strongest from the continent – ayaaa – good!! We’re all part of this global kijiji.
As for the blogging business – I’d asked myself the same today! M, let us just do it and write down our stories. The other day I got a call from a friend of mine and while she was telling me this and that, I just had this “ohh….this is sooooo going into my blog (LOL)” nini in my head, but then, it is true – no one just wants to read this and that. It’s about getting to the point and selling a message with some humour. Please correct me if I am wrong on this one, but I guess it’s also about keeping a certain level so readers will always return and still be curious what kind of laughter the writes has up in his sleeves. As for your blog – your entries have been hilarious and extremly entertaining (to say the least), so I guess you don’t have to worry about feedback. That is, the stories themselves are good enough to exist on their own.
On the other hand though, blogging – in my opinion – isn’t just about putting some text online – it’s about interaction. Writing and reading.

    True, true

As for those Kenyans and friends of Kenya online (aaahh…anyone out here who remembers those early days of the KOL mailing list?) – I have met a lot of nice Kenyans online since 1996 (who have always wandered why this mZungu (as in “crazy”) German calls himself Kikuyumoja, but well, that’s another story). Blabla…history has carried me away ;-)

    :))

It’s good to look back and it’s also good see that the community is getting stronger every day and actually being heard OFFLINE.

Yeah, just my 2c on this subject – sorry for this longer post :-)
    jke

Not to worry … there are no limits here. Mi casa es su casa!
  • chepkemboi

Happy that you’ll continue blogging. I love your writing.

    Danke!

  • http://bilazWellidontwishtodiscloseatthemoment brainz

Its certainly has been long i still rememer those days we used to Debate in mashada with you (God knows over what) i cant remeber but yes mashada is a pale shadow of what it used to be.

Wonder where all the old crew disappared to!

I have been following your blogz/webzine for a long time and yes i am so guilty of being a back bencher.

M you have a great following my guy im sure if u stood for president all our curerent politicians would gasp at the masses you attract.

:)) Why is everyone putting these ideas of being called ‘Mtukufu Rais’ in my head?!!!

Keep up the good work even if we don’t comment all the time we do appreciate all that you do.

    Merci
  • Ni2

    Yesssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can see my pleas didnt fall on deaf ears. Yes people I was practically on the floor grabbing his leg and beggining him not to stop blogging… he gave up and concented when he realised that I wasnt going to let go… the kicks I wasnt given… M I didnt know you had a violent side

Now, if you keep hitting my shoe with your head, what can i do?

Since I took one for the community… people you owe me! We shall discuss more on a later date. Just make a note of this.

    @jke
Thanks for the post/comment. Please expand more on this site M is trying to keep secret. I have been reading M’s stuff since he was on Yahoo. (Nice to see we have that in common -> @Udi)

I’d be suprised if anyone remembers — but it’ll be a long wait before I release that URL … maybe when I’m famous I can sell the URL on ebay :D

    @M
Its interesting how many people actually read your blog. Its a whole *cough* silent community out here.

  • Ni2

    @brainz

Are there any kenyan forums out there. Worth the visit? I was at Mashada… I didnt stay…

  • Dusty

hey M. your blog’s just great. glad you’ve decided not to stop blogging just yet! cheers.

    Gracias
  • http://guessaurus.com Guess

Pick on you, pick your brains (ok, scratch that – well, dont want my eyes scratched out – I only have two, and no spares :( ) pick some fruits (forbidden?) pick some birds (ok, skating on some thin ice here guess ;) ) pick up some info, pick some humour, pick up where we left off… need I go on?

Picking my pocket is off the cards!

Hey – some of us are just glad to have picked this as a place to camp, ok Mister :) ?

    OK, missus!
  • http://livejournal.com/users/mlevi mlevi

okay fine, youve made us sit up and be counted. i think ive been a pretty regular reader since the early days, i even remember that kuzunguka webring (waaaaaaaaaaa thats was tene sana)

Ah, yes, I remember you chief! :)) Kumbe uko?

But youre a funny chap, remember when u used to tell us not ask for updates and that you shall not be pressurized eh? hahaha dictatorship is over, andika kijana, the people demand it of you (tis a good thing after all innit?)

The power of the mob ….. :D

and yes i must admit the standards of discussion on mashada have dropped terribly.

Donno what happened! Such a shame!
  • http://echomouse.blogspot.com/ Carrie

Yayyy!!!! Glad you’re going to keep at it :) As you said, there are very few good writers blogging. You’re one of them so please don’t ever stop completely if at all possible.

    Well … :”>

I must say I find it interesting in a twilight zone sort of way that your first archived post occurred on my birthday. See… that means something. ;) LOL

    My mysterious ways …

For me, I used to be a really great at writing but lost a lot of skills while working in finance. I’m trying to improve and recover some creativity. I’m also disabled due to chronic illness, so blogging is a way for me to participate in the world without aggravating my illness. I wish I was a better blogger but I do the best I can. Thanks for hanging in there. I’ll try to be better about commenting :)

Thank you! Sorry for the illness –have you eaten from the essential food groups (chocolate and ice cream)?
  • http://magaidi.com/diary magaidi

M…you’ve resurrected Mlevi with all this ‘retirement talk’ The sheer wit jamaa and you want to give it all up? Actually I remember waaaaay back when this was all ify ify!…now you have legions. Actually i’ve seen this transcend from just ‘rantings and ravings’ from a Kenyan perspective to a somewhat all inclusive forum for education and laughs at the same time. I do agree with you, Mashada isn’t what it used to be. It’s boring and lame. Remember the days you and y5next used to dropkick folks in there(a fella by the name MTT- remember?)…I can only say this buddy, you’ve moved on to bigger and better things. Stay online.

Man, I kumbuka those days … memories! BTW I also kumbuka your geocities thing :) Thanks for keeping the faith!
  • I

now that you know we all want you to say.. Get back to work and write something… and yeah… about that blogging everyday.. when can you start?

I’m thinking the 32nd of October
  • TeeJ

My guy! Please don’t give us a scare like that again. I need my daily dose of Thinkersroom (not so daily anymore) I wish u could post daily tho.

Post daily? 8-} Unfortunately I have to work for a living ….

I’ve been reading ur posts since Homo Habilis dude (from days when mashada was decent and not full of retards). That’s how much of a follower I am. I have to apologize however for not ever posting a comment but it’s coz you always leave me with no words and also I soma mostly @ jobo; but now that u’ve said ‘lol’ constitutes to a comment, u’ll be getting alot of that so don’t take it back.
I love your work. keep ‘em posts coming.

I will try and keep the flag flying. Thanks
  • http://haidhuru.blogsome.com Mutumia

Now the thing is, I used to catch your old site (not the “old- old “one- just one old) and I remember being so thrilled when I found your blog on blogger. Soooo. now that you’re a Kenyan Institution (he he) maybe you can *smiling prettily and batting eyelids* um… blog daily? You know we love our Thinker’s room! It’s the least you can do especially after abandoning us hukos at Blogger *harumph* -Man moves on up and he leaves the old neighborhood – classic Black Flight- the de-gentrifiaction of Blogger *sigh*
    :)

Abandon you? Me? o:-) Oh no cherie! Blogger will always be the hood we grew up in!
  • Njoro

    M,
You’re addictive! You’re like something illicit, yet soo good! I come to your site, there’s a post, I am happy – I LOL to my heart’s content.
I come to your site, there’s no post and, imagine this, I am actually really disappointed – day just not the same. No pressure here!
    Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Daily updates! Naahhh I kinda like the way he does it 0-2 posts a week. IMHO ofcourse.

Smartest thing you’ve said all decade :))

    @Mlevi
hahaha I too remember M’s disclaimers about not being hassled about updates and that he will do so when he feels like

Putting ideas in my head …. :-?

When http://www.thinkersroom.com was out that was the first thing I checked. I was surprised that he dropped that.

Disclaimer is still there but needs desperately to be updated
  • http://livejournal.com/users/mlevi mlevi

@magaidi… another name there from the past. Remember when the jamaa would take Mr. Twist? otherwise known as Mark Twist Thuo, now there was a retard if there ever was one.

Those were the days! Kumbuka a clown who called himself ‘FuccDeezHoez’? :))

@M… yes pwana niko tu!!!enyewe them were some proper out and out brawls on Mashada. So any of you chaps out there see a jamaa with a Mashada T-shirt here in Nai, say wassup coz that shirt be old school. and what is this M maneno? youre THINKER (he of the deadly wit and scathing pen)

Never did get one of them t-shirts :(

    @ M
maybe you can start an ol skool mashada club or somn it really used to be so much fun then & the critiques were a whole lot more constructive.

Well, a change is as good as a rest … got a bit tired of that particular moniker. Besides, M is much more keyboard friendly!

I loved the Homo habilis site and though I only discovered it early this year, I have read most of the posts and man are you talented! But I must say that you are less…inspired these days? Perhaps why you wanted to take that break? Don’t get me wrong, I still love the way you write it just seems less…edgy.

Next you should threaten to publish IP addresses from the “Spongy” repeat visitors who visit your blog. (I would be somewhere in that list of shame as I have been reading for the last 60 days without a word dropped). Haibu kabisa. Hongera bwana. Endelea vivyo hivyo!
