Two Steps Forward

Posted March 2nd, 2006 in News by M

EDIT #3 18:05

Well! Whenever I say Mwai Kibaki is the type of man who never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity, he grits his teeth in determination and exemplifies the notion. And then when I say that no matter how low the bar is set, the Kibaki Government will find a way to slither under.

Last night the police raided the Standard and KTN newsrooms, and razed some of today’s editions of the Standard Newspaper. Not content with their handiwork, they shut down the KTN signal. Me and 30 million odd other Kenyans woke up to this unwelcome news.

Apparently the Government objected to a story in the Saturday Standard, alleging that Mwai Kibaki had met one of the more prominent LDP leaders, Kalonzo Musyoka. The Government has been so incensed that 3 journalists have been unwilling guests of the state, enjoying the cuisine and hospitality of the Kilieleshwa police station for the last two days. Without charge, may I add.
This smacks to me of hyporcisy. When it comes to fabrications the Government stands head and shoulders above everyone else.

With regards to the Anglo Leasing Scandal:

It is a scandal …
that never was

Kiraitu Murungi – Former Justice Minister

There is nothing wrong …
with the tender

Moody Awori, Vice President

People are not dying form famine. They are dying from death

Njenga Karume – Former Minister, Special Projects

Every time the Government spokesman, a chap long overdue to break his voice, opens his mouth, most Kenyans grab the tops of their heads to keep them from exploding. He provides little information and plenty of comic relief, and I for one am waiting breathlessly for what will clearly be a ludicrous defence.

As I write this the Police Commissioner is out of town and the Minister of Information is denying any knowledge of the raids.

The irony is just a week ago a full page ad from the Government comedian spokesman urged us to be grateful to Mwai Kibaki for being benevolent enough to grant us freedom of expression.

The more things change the more they tend to stay the same.

I don’t mind saying at times I get apprehensive when I think about some of the things i’ve said about said Government.

But then again the Government is stuffed by fellows who think the Internet is used to catch fish.

Stay tuned.

#Edit 1

My money is on one former Homeguard and current Internal Security Minister, John Michuki. The fact that the paramilitary General Service unit was involves exonerates most of the sitting ministers who are really very junior officials who have little or any work. Only Internal Security and maybe Defence can order around the GSU.

#Edit 2

I win all the bets I placed. Minister John Michuki has all but confessed to being behind it, the schmuck! The return of the Gestapo like tactics of yesteryear?

#Edit 3

We’re now so infamous we’re on Al Jazeera

Onto cheerier things – The White African has just been visited by a stork. Congratulations dude!

Did Karume really say that or is that your usual satire?????!!!!!!!!! I demand a link! Lakini it’s really too bad, that a government famed for its inaction becomes suddenly shows a lot of action of the wrong sort. It’s beyond anger now, it’s sadness at such bungling incompetency.

” no matter how low the bar is set, the Kibaki Government will find a way to slither under”
I fully agree with that statement we ought to do somn in solidarity as a whole country to show our complete and utter displeasure in this govt.

I really admire the way south africans (majority anyway) boycoted the elections to show solidarity and displeasure in their GOVT.

  • http://prousette.blogspot.com Prousette

    …thirty backwards. Some progress indeed.

There are things I as a Kenyan who voted for a President do not care about.
    1. Whether the President has one wife or sixty two.
    2. Whether the President met in secret with XYZ.
I just need him to run the country or isn’t that what presidents are meant to do?
The two things above seem to generate a lot of unnecessary heat , light and ashes.

It seems the golfing advisers are trying very hard to divert attention from their wayward ways. Sorry folks even if you burnt down KICC I shall still need to know why you invented Anglofleecing with thirty percent of my hard earned cash.

  • Shiroh

    what do i say?

    Complacency will still kill Kenyans.

We won’t do anything. We are still in our offices working like nothing happened. And really after 3 days we will move on and forgot. We can be stepped on you know.

  • Shiroh

    OOh and am 3rd.

But then again the Government is stuffed by fellows who think the Internet is used to catch fish.
LOL, dude gani hilo (to be read in Kiswahili)

  • http://www.kenyanmusings.blogspot.com kenyanmusings

I will sit tight and watch this unfold. I think there is more to it than meets the eye. I think there are too many stakeholders involved in any possible end result….LOL@ Karume quote. Dayum dude! double lol @ catching fish and yyaaaaay at # 4. Not bad a position…..

  • http://www.kenyanmusings.blogspot.com kenyanmusings

saaaary, that was like number 6. Shucks! Ati I have 1 comment? Is this blog of yours mad. after being such a dedicated groupie? I demand a recount.
By the way, when they said Commandos raided KTN, were they like without underwear?

  • http://www.gukira.blogspot.com Keguro

No time for complacency. Kibaki signaled his unwillingness to take critique when he lost the referendum. This latest move simply suggests that the secret meeting with the former head of state *might* have taken place. No comment on his Museveni-like tactics.

Strong letters of protest–posted on every single blog and outlet we can think of. It needs to be done.

  • http://chrenyan.wordpress.com Chrenyan

    Indeed, Prousette, INDEED!

  • Dusty

Kibaki does it again. When I read the account in the Daily Nation I was like: WHAAAT?

I’m waiting to see if Alfred Mutua will continue with his series of full-page ‘advertiser’s announcements’ in the papers of how the Kibaki Government has allowed for freedom of the press.

Meanwhile just heard a news update that the three journalists have been moved to Kilimani Police Station and still no mention of the charge against them…

  • http://zimpundit.blogspot.com Zimpundit

I’m saddened by this episode. It is remniscent of the bombings, raiding and constant badgering of the Daily News which had emerged as the biggest daily in Zimbabwe but happened to report the truth as opposed to propaganda. The Daily News is closed now.

I hope it doesn’t come to this in Kenya.

In meantime can someone tell Kibaki, Mugabe and the rest of these African strongmen that freedom of expression is not a privilege, it’s an inalienable right.

“I think, therefore I am.” Descartes.

  • http://www.ajkenswi.blogspot.com Adrian

these guys have totally lost it!!!!

  • mruhya

the bright goons forgot to shutdown the standard group’s website. the same guy in charge of taking down the parliament site mustve been charged with that responsibility.

  • mruhya
  • Ni2

    I’ve had enough.

If this works for the Presi then it should for me. If you cant beat them, join them!

    **sticks head in hole**

  • Ms K

Police statement says Standard group closed over “evidence pointed to an intention of inciting ethnic hate and animosity leading to a breach of the peace.”

Oh and the three journalists have been released on Kshs 50,000 bail after being charged with “publishing an alarming statement”.

  • http://medusalive.blogspot.com Medusa

You have got to be kidding me!!
We’ve truly sunk to a new low.
This stinks to high heaven..It reeks of diversion antics- Can you believe the display of arrogance by Michuki??

  • http://www.whiteafrican.com hash

Just when you think things are getting better, that the old ways might have changed…. That is sad news indeed. Here’s the best part of the story though, the fact that these people don’t understand that they’re raiding the wrong news medium.

We (I use that term loosely) are the news hounds of the day. There’s a reason that bloggers get their stories stolen, or are openly quoted in today’s newspapers, TV and Radio – we are getting the news out and writers like you are shedding light on a story that the everyday news reporter is afraid to touch. When you’re part of an organization (like the Standard) you can be tracked and intimidated. A blogger can be anonymous, or not even in the same country, so therefore can speak without fear.

So, you have websites like this one that are heavily read by Kenyans. What you need is to have even more Kenyans reading it. The fact of massive readership is what makes a news source a news source – not the name of the site/organization or the medium.

Don’t believe me? Let’s take America’s most profitable news site as an example: The Drudge Report. (Set aside political thoughts for a moment please) The Drudge Report is just a blog, Drudge just happened to be the blogger that broke the Lewinski scandal though. Overnight he gets famous. People start emailing him news stories. He posts those stories before the mainstream news can talk about them. Now he is the place to go for news for conservatives in America.

Get the picture? Let these fools fight the wrong battle. Still fight in court for our basic rights to speak, but don’t be intimidated. Build a network, build a community and readership, make change happen.

P.S. Thanks for everyone’s thoughts on the baby, she’s doing great.

Oh men! Aren’t those people a bunch of hooligans!
I had wanted to comment on your NGO post, but yani, you put up another one before I had the chance!…and then there all these other kenyans who rush to comment on your post…so here I am coming in at I don’t even know number what! Anyway, ive been wondering if Perhaps I am one of those who has been hanging out with Na Yvette and her ilk.
I read your post and in some way heard the clattering of my pipe dreams as they were rudely thrown down the stairs!
I want change! Many others do and many others don’t! we all know as a people that we’re being screwed over, so what then. If I honestly give a damn about issues like poverty and yes(here comes the ‘evil’ word)… development! What do I do about it! Sit back?! Hate and give numerous diatribes against those who have colonised our mental and physical wealth? Or go and give them hell in their organizations, try and vunja their glass houses kabisa. I would need a whole lot of courage ,guts and energy ama sio! Cause the moment you open your mouth you could very well be chasing your own diabs out the door!
If every person who comments on such issues on KBW really wanted change they could do it! What would be the rewards of your valiant efforts? Would it have been worth it? You may ask. I don’t know, but I believe there are those who might hear you story and think, that person wasn’t just a mdomo! He was a man of his word. It might be your colleague or some random peeps from shags who realises that all city folk aren’t superficial, silly people! That stories of strength and honour don’t only exist in Gladiator or Brave heart!
People need to start asking themselves ‘Where is MY platform for change’ and to start making an effort and by the way if your labour is bearing no fruit, then perhaps eh… your hogging someone else’s space!
Hmmm, So where is the best platform for change? Our sitting rooms? Our blogs? Our offices?… NGO’s? and I’m not even talking about arranging a coup. Does anyone talk to their small cousins, sisters, bros the house-help, or even the watchi about these things,?
(Sigh)…anyway, keep on writing Mr..M. As a young Kenyan, I can honestly say, you have made me think! Hooray! and mad kudos! your blog is thoroughly entertaining.

  • http://afromusing,com/blog afroM

    reprehensible. I am so livid.

An aside, just how callous can you be to ask for the UPS, the thugs were just methodical…uhhm its an ‘Uninterruptible power Supply’ system you dolts! its not supposed to be messed with…

  • http://www.vituvingisana.blogspot.com VituVingiSana

I am breaking my long silence because this has hurt me to the core. I am a young Kenyan who KNOWS we can be so much more. This is a throwback to the moi days. And most Kenyans know what that was like & never want to go back!

The government pays good money to advertise how much “freedom” we have now & goes right on to perpetrate the same crimes.

I am not an advocate of violence but I wish Kenyans would just peacefully shut down the country for a few days. It will cause immense pain & suffering but I hope Kenyans can force an interim government & start afresh asap.

My heart was not in my work today. I am dejected & ANGRY over what transpired. kibaki & his minions should be looking at S.Africa, Rwanda & Botswana for inspiration NOT Uganda & Zimbabwe.

I might not agree with the Standard on many issues especially the quality of reporting but what was perpetrated was pure hate by imbeciles.

Do the pumbavus realise that this will only galvanise Kenyans against them?
Do they realise that Kenyans might see violence as the only way out?
Do they realise that they can sue Standard if they feel they were maligned?
Is there something else they are hiding?

Anyway, I need to go brood…

“But then again the Government is stuffed by fellows who think the Internet is used to catch fish.”

ROTFLMFAO!!!!!….How d’you come up with such stuff? I’m still reeling from this one.

    Michuki the homeguard!…LMAO!

On a more serious note, I’m sure there’ll be a lot of articles written about this which should make for interesting reading on the blogosphere the next few days. On my part, I just don’t see how, roughing up guardsmen and moonlighters can in any way minimize any potential “political damage” from the story that baks met KM. In any case, the story will probably be found to be untrue. Like you say M, peeps in the administration have the IQ of powdered water.

    Washindwe pepo!

    I see it made boingboing:

    http://www.boingboing.net/2006/03/02/media_shutdown_in_ke.html

More exposure is what we need — people in Nairobi go out and take pictures, hear and see — blog, send emails, upload pictures to flikr — use the new media to show them they CANNOT control us any more.

  • http://mywordsonly.blogspot.com acolyte

A pal of mine who works at the Standard told me how he had to go and re-do the layout at 6am as it was on his comp which was one of those carried away by those thugs.Like I told some blogger who was trying to justify the governments actions, there is a way of doing things. It is called due process.Plus isnt some government official supposed to be reading the first edition of the paper? If they had done so and taken exception they should have then impounded the paper and hauled in the editors.Plus I dont get to watch KTN so I would like to know whether KTN covered the story or are they guilty by association.
I once a long time ago campaigned for a gvt publicist but what we have is a government parrot plus all the usual suspects keep putting their feet in their mouths in turns.
Even in the worst Moi days I do not recall him ever doing something this drastic.
ps: who was policing the city as all those cops were herding Standard employees on Likoni Rd?

  • http://www.vituvingisana.blogspot.com VituVingiSana

krisidiot (if he was still in the govt) would have called the media attention on the raid a “Blitish prot to bling down da regitimate erected government”…

Insanity – Affliction that affects kibaki, members of his family, his associates & his hired goons.

After roocy’s (kib’s wife #1) foray into the Nation Centre was a bust, kibs sent his goons to the Standard.

michuki – a former homeguard – is a nincompoop. Hussein Ali (Commish of Police) needs to either fire kamau & all the senior officers who participated in this raid OR resign in protest!

This same kamau was involved in “investigating” the Goldenberg scandal frustrated Murgor’s (then DPP) efforts to investigate high level crime. According to kibs kamau is “one of us”.

How can the police investigate themselves…? Anyone smell the stink of COVERUP?
Oh, by the CID headed by kamau…

as they say where i come from, you kill a snake by thwacking the head. if you get the drift, do the needful come 2007. or even earlier as these nitwits are on a mission to outdo each other to please their fence sitting, tight-lipped, sleepy boss (i can imagine the glee pasted across his face as he watched the cctv clips: some warped sense of humour this baks got)
