Be Careful

Posted May 18th, 2006 in News, Reflections by M

When Jimmy Hoffa disappeared, I’m sure my name appeared somewhere in the list of suspects, my tender youth notwithstanding. I always seem to find myself deeply in the mix of things that have absolutely nothing to do with me.

The brouhaha between one Poi and one MentalAcrobatics is no exception. One day I’m whistling in a corner minding my own business and the next, thanks to a heads-up from MKNN (Miss K News Network) I find myself deeply in the mix.

Putting personalities aside, this is a matter with far reaching ramifications as well as lessons to be learned. If consenting adults want to be adventurous online then a giddy-up to them! Onward! But if one party is unwilling — well, that’s another kettle of fish altogether. Totally unacceptable. We would not accept it in an office or on the street and i see no reason to accept it online. In fact Njoki Ndungu had better amend her bill to include this sort of thing. Its harassment, plain and simple.

I have received a couple of emails on this matter from very distressed individuals and quite frankly I have no idea what to do with them. There is a problem somewhere.

As blogs grow more and more interactive, we seem to fail to notice that blogging is speedily approaching the realm of internet chat rooms.

Most of us at one time or another have been to chat rooms, and some of us still visit them. When did you last give your phone number, postal address or worse still physical address in a chat room? Why should blogging be any different?

Quick, how many people that you have never met, never seen, and never heard have you give up personal contact information to?

“But I know these people!” You say.

Well, sorry to disappoint you but you don’t know squat!

All you know is exactly what the other person wants you to know. No more no less. You cannot purport to know anyone on the strength of a few blog posts and a couple of email address!

“But these are Kenyans!” You say.

So what? I hate to burst your bubble but Kenyans have as high a percentage of yahoos and loonies as any other country.

One thing we tend to overlook is that the anonymity that blogging affords gives people carte blanche to behave in ways that they otherwise wouldn’t. To create totally different identities of themselves. To say things that they otherwise would not. To seek some sort of sense of liberation.

This is something that we should not lose sight of.

Don’t get me wrong — there are lots of wonderful people blogging. Trust me. I know. There are many. I have made some very good friends from this blogging thing, and I have met some of the most aMazinG people. For this I cannot even begin to be grateful.

But like most treasures they take time to discover. Time.

So do take the same precautions you would in a chat room. Ask yourself how many people you’ve never met, don’t know their full names and can’t even confirm if they are male of female know your home phone number or worse still where you live.

There’s a fine line between being friendly and being naive.

For the past couple of months, Kenyan Pundit and yours truly have been working on Mzalendo.com, an initiative whose main aim is to keep track of what those appalling members of parliament of ours have been doing as they purportedly work for us. This is a project that came to birth over a breakfast or two at Java House. There’s something in that coffee …. Anyway, it’s very rough around the edges and is very much in beta, but do check it out and give us some feedback. To be specific any errors or features you’d like. And please do link to the site and spread the word.

We lost. We put up a fight but we lost. Hats off to Barcelona. Congratulations. Till we meet again. Team Venger & Co – ROCK ON!

Lets see what the ‘cat’ dragged in – :D :D

  • http://www.guessaurus.com Guessaurus

    =)) =)) :-* :-* :-*

    Where do I start..???
I am guilty of on so many fronts I should be labelled ‘sinner’ with a capital ‘T’ – dont start with Me.
    O:-) – yes I know :(

Like you I have met a few aMazing bloggers – both online and in real-life, that I couldnt even start to enumerate how much some of them have enriched my life – from MKNN to some other people with Nicknames you couldnt find on blogpost.com – but all the same, I know that I dont really know most of these people and while I cannot confess to being as careful as I should be with sharing personal information, heck… ok, point taken.

But all you that I ‘know’ are good people right?

    Right?

    >:) Of course!

*G decides to take a moment to reflect, but does a header to the thought a la Sol Campbell on that lonesome goal.. *sob sob*

I swear that ref wasnt fair, I am with Henry though, we won even though we didnt take the cup – 10 players, Lehmann red carded and all, that first half was intense to say the least. Arsenal were amazing cos I (unlike them) thought losing a keeper and a player that early in the game should have been a morale kick in the proverbial, but they were great. I was wincing at every moment the man I would most like to adopt and … er… yeah that, got hold of the ball. No stopping that babyfaced Ronaldinho – how I so hate him right now.

True true. The guy I really feel sorry for is poor Manuel. He looked a bit terrified when he stepped up to the game. He must be feeling really bad, the poor guy!

Enough about football (what? I will be sulking all week after this)??

About Mzalendo – you know I know how much effort has gone into it – Kudos to you and Ory for making it happen and working to inform the rest of us about the goings on of the copyrighted ‘fossils with tonsils that reverberate in different isles’ in our country… Gracias – and good luck.. I will be looting for said site on my site ASAP

=)) =)) at that fag company – you know they be dealing with the ass end of the ciggie smoking, and the bottom line is, the butts of said fags end bottom’s up on their ‘Assed’ bins :D

With ads like that they will be the butt of many jokes!

I am going, hold fire.. but like the terminator, *say it with me* I will be back

Remind me to put up a groan of the day about that line. I have a TERRIBLE one!
  • http://www.guessaurus.com Guessaurus

Oh and did ITV – the channel airing the game here – have to air Ronaldinho’s Nike advert (featuring Ooh ah Cantona – as in Eric) every which way till Sunday – and still, did the commentator have to keep saying his (R) name over and over as in He is the world’s best player, best paid, fastest, etc while commentating in the game – shoot (?), I think he was being paid by how many times he uttered the name Ronaldinho (I blame his fixation on the Dundee game or something) – citing his accomplishments and stuff, bluntly worshipping him while an English team were playing ( in his strippy suit (uuuggghh)- I think(er) we need to find his ass (No reference to quoted fag-making company)) and lynch him – what happened to patriotism, what happened to being on the fence (Do not even go there, I know people who know people -and as of yesterday I am the ‘bona fide’ fixer, so there)

MSK (NN) help :(( :(( – ass (pun all the way intended) will be back – again

After the 76th minute of the game, the 76th – I am doomed cos that is the bus I take to work – hell and damnation O:-) I knew when I told God that this wasnt something he should be solely concerned with ‘but’ – see I am to blame, I sealed our fate. I didnt kick any balls (literally and oh, there were some moments there that warranted an ‘ouch’ moment even from me) figuratively I did – I am soo going to ‘relegation’ in a ‘net’ :((

Laugh at me, why dont you :((

    :))
  • Fellow Non-Drinker

Great post. Glad that u pointed out what really should be common sense, but is somehow lost on most when it comes to interacting online (myself included on some occasions!).

Food for thought is always filling

Hadn’t read your Al Koholic post, so went back to it. Great stuff. Of the reasons you give for not drinking, #1 and #3 exactly mirror mine, on top of the fact that I just never picked it up.

    :) Interesting times, these!

Oooooooh top 5!Now to go off and read!

  • http://mywordsonly.blogspot.com acolyte

Hey M!I saw your name being dragged in the mud huko Mashada but I stayed out coz from experience entering mashada to settle an issue is trying to wrestle down a pig in a mud patch. You won’t catch the pig, you’ll get pissed off, be coverred in mud and the pig will be happy.

Tell me about it! Reminded me why I quit the place

But anyhow that whole Poi and Mental situation is not funny at all and unacceptable. But as you said there is a thin line between being friendly and naive.

Arsenal tried their best but against the likes of Barcelona there was only going to be one outcome!Maybe next year…

Btw i believe you promised to eat your hat if Arsenal made it to the last 8. Bon appetit!

The Al Koholic post was a classic.I posted something kind of similar about the way Kenyans all over (home and abroad) drink way too much for their own good! For many Kenyans I know if there isnt booze involved then it isnt fun.Good thing I have gone past that stage.

    Thanks!

Seems Kenyan tobbaco companies are branching out in all ways possible!

Anyway take care of your good name before someone else throws it in the mud!

:)) I have a feeling that interesting times are around the corner

Good point you have there about naivety and blogging behavior. Same thing you do about protecting your identity on the street should be reapplied to the web. I read the Mashada thing and thought it hilarious (but then again what do you expect from Mashada?). Kudos to you and KP for the Mzalendo idea. Have throroughly linked to it and expect it to be a great tool for our generation and future generations to keep tabs on the House of Greed.

    Thank ye, thank ye!

For a reason or another i thought you were never going to comment on that issue. But as you say you dont know people.

Ala? Kwani its a taboo subject and we weren’t supposed to talk about it? No one sent me the memo! :(

Arsenal just refused to play. That was how i saw it.

Personally I think they played pretty well given the circumstances….

    Very interesting times indeed

Forgot to ask someone who was up half the night why they were clapping to themselves at midnight and disturbing my sleep I think I have an idea which side he was on, now.

I believe the hop-scotch finals were on at the same time

But I know you Kenyans, don’t I? Thinker must not go *20 inch placard in luminous yellow and ngween*

Bottom end of the market indeed.

@shiro mashada is regularly offline so you should just try again some other time.

  • Ms K

    Dude, MKNN?? Eh? Tutaonana kando.

Arsenal played a BRILLIANT game. No-one with good sense should even laugh or mock Arsenal. They played like real champions! I dare say no other team would have held Barcelona for that long with TEN men. Kudos Arsenal!!

    :D Pewa keki! Smart woman!!

Altho man, after the way I was shouted at for supporting Barca instead of Arsenal, it felt good to win. LOL I was the proverbial langa in that game. Wanting both teams to win.

I was the only Arsenal fan sitting in the middle of a ‘genge la wafuasi wa Barcelona’. Things were — interesting

About that other thing, we is all grown folks here. We must engage common sense and intelligence when interacting with virtual paople. As in all other relationship I dare say. It is not rocket science!!

    Nawhatamean?!!

    @Guess
Pole mami. I feel you man, I felt lousy when Arsenal lost. LOL I am such an oxymoron. Ati I’m happy Barca won but sad Arsenal lost. LOL I should be banned from football!!

    So, two shots or three?

    Congrats on the new Mzalendo.com.

Totally agree with “All you know is exactly what the other person wants you to know.” We’ve all been there, got burnt, but hopefully took the lesson.
Yes!! Hats off to Barca – enjoyed Etoo’s usual deft little touches and affinity for results. After Arsenal drew first blood against impossible odds, it was like Barca just seemed to say, “OK, we’ll take it from here” ….

When Larsson came in the death knell sounded. Arsenal’s game plan seemed centered around containing Ronaldinho
  • http://www.ajkenswi.blogspot.com Adrian

nice on KM – tell them!!! ati aMazinG….

As a great man once said: :-P

arsenal made me proud last night.

You and me both. They tried.

    still a bit sad though…

One wonders the outcome if Lehman had stayed on …
  • I

M.. funny you should mention this “About this time last year I wrote one of my all time favourite posts, The Name’s Al. Al Koholic.” About this time last year a freind send me that post and i have not been the same since….

I choose to believe it changed for the better! :)

But back to blogging and personal information on line… I have to say that if anyone in this day and age still thinks they know someone after they have exhanged afew lines online, they are truly BEYOND NAIVE…… dont people read the news?!?!?!

  • I

I have to ask thou’… Do y’all think a human being can just disappear into thin air?!?!?!?

Yep. Just go to any constituency and ask the people if they’ve seen thier MP!
  • Shiroh

M, that is not what i meant. I had seen people proding you to say something about it in last post. i was holding my breath to see if you would. God what is wrong with my English today? No one seems to understand what i am saying. i have been having a meaningless conversation the whole day becoz of my English.

All this can be traced to what you did last night! =))

The only thing taboo is to talk ill of your mother.

    Anyhow. Lemme just stop there.

  • http://www.kenyanmusings.blogspot.com KM

LOOL @ disappearing into thin air equals MP disappearing into thin air after votes.

Reminds me of people that got voted for “most humorous’ then the humor stoped coming….haki ya nyanya, the way the afore said people worked tirelessly to keep KBW laughing days before the votes…..

These people have been spotted about town engaged in nefarious activities >:)

Anyway, I said, “vote for me, I will deliver”……had you listened, y’all would be keeling over dying of laughter but noooooooooo, you had to be fooled by Raila AGAIN!!!

Its enough already that the country is going down…..now KBW too?

    Class action anyone?

LOL @ the Yahoos and Loonies quip. BTW congrats on Mzalendo. Now atleast those of us away from the motherland can follow somehow what our ‘loonies and yahoos’ in parliament are doing. Expect feedback from yours truly.

    Excellent, excellent my man!

    Eventually we all learn. Eventually

Oh BTW – I don’t hold it against you for being an Arsenal fan :), after all the shots you’ve taken at ManU fans ALL THESE YEARS!..(me included), all I can say is Hehheeeee! Good game though, it was.

Very good game. At least we’re in good company with teams that have taken home nothing this season. Like yours =))

Seeing as though I had promised to eat my hat if Arsenal made it to the last 8, I went out to the mall and had one made out of chocolate!I am munching away as I type.Mzalendo.com is a good idea and is looking great so far! Let me peruse it and see what can be added as I am going to be doing a course in African politics this summer so it will come in handy when I want to write a term paper of how things have gone wrong for us and how we can fix them. But of course when I get my A, I will credit you and Kenyan Pundit.

Reality check, wake up call, the blog district has its dark alleys… I guess it’s always good to keep sight of what led you there in the first place. Why you do it at all. The world wide web remains a web.

I don’t understand people hating on Arsenal’s game. BIG UPS to a young, brave team. How the hek do they think we got to the finals? 10 men held-off the world’s best team for 80 minutes. A team with Eto’o, Wonder-girl, Giuly, Larson et al should have white-washed us. No, we did well.

    Tell them! Tell them!!

That said, the western press does not give Eto’o the respect he deserves as a finisher, I think. They seem to give all the shine to Wonder-girl. And in the final, Larson. Eto’o was man of the match, recognize!

Eto’o has always been underrated. It’s always refreshing to see the underdog having the last laugh!

No offence to either of them, but the point is, we just don’t know. So everybody, take care. It’s a jungle errrr… in here!

    Hi M,

Thanks for this post … it will no doubt enlighten some of us to be wary of people we meet over the Internet, and how to take precautions we generally overlook.

Due to the lack of support from KBW Poi has quit blogging altogether. We will no longer be able to enjoy her lovely poetry.

This is very sad and very disappointing. As she so rightly put, the otherwise vocal feminists in this forum have been deafeningly silent.

This is a shame to the blogosphere as a whole, to KBW and to women, that someone can be sexually harassed and finally driven away and people can just stand by. What a shame!

If SIX of us can’t cause action to be taken, no one will. If this is a community that is unwilling to speak out against sexual harassment then it says a lot about us, doesn’t it?

Ultimately, this blog ring is tarnished by its leadership.

Thank you for letting me sound off and for hosting my thoughts. Yes, it’s a bit cowardly to hide behind anonymity but to be honest I don’t have the courage to fight everyone.

  • http://www.sylkwan.blogspot.com Shiroh

Due to the lack of support from KBW Poi has quit blogging altogether. We will no longer be able to enjoy her lovely poetry.
@Bertha,.Ok why do you drag KBW into all this?

Mental and Poi are two people who most of KBW do not know personally. So even Mental wrote a post to the same effect. That people didnt support him.

Ok so who do you want us to support? And why??

The allegations in themselves are strong and remain unproven.

I love Poi, the one i know online. She has beautiful posts right! What much else do we know.

Of course no one would support such kind of behaviour if it were to be proven.

The Mashad a conversation confirms one thing that don’t believe all that people say. See how Thinker turned Mental in a rush.

I know something for sure i save all my discussions with people online. all the time. That is on Messenger. If something like that were to happen then i would chomoa evidence.

Leave KBW out of this. And please utilize your tubrains kidogo tu. We are tired of the accusations the likes of you keep throwing at us without any good reasons!!!

  • http://www.sylkwan.blogspot.com Shiroh

And M, those accusations at Mashada were a bit far fetched. And you are even a moderator. And you posted pictures from Anfield and so you were in the UK. Heartless people whose work is to peddle lies and half truths.

    people have no lives!!!

  • http://www.virtuallyinsane.blogspot.com wangu

M, to say I empathise would be an understatement. The truth is that the matatu guys are in cahoots.

Towards the end of last week, one of them had the audacity to ask me what my thoughts were on paying 40 bob instead of 20. Are they nuts? They don’t know that walking is a probable option for us?

Of course I told him that they’d have to offer coffee for every such trip. Is there a chance that they heard rumours about a money plant that actually yields money on this end of the globe?

    Hmmmpph!!
