Mzalendo Buzz

Having Mzalendo.com mentioned in Wednesday’s Daily Nation has led to a flood of feedback that has certainly shown that there is keen interest in what Ory and I are trying to do.

Which is pretty much empowering Kenyans with regard to their own Government.

You have a right to know just how your MP represents you. You have a right to know how they voted in certain bills. You have a right to know how they express themselves. You have a right to know what sort of questions they ask on the floor. You have a right to know how government representatives respond to questions.

It is your right!

If there is one thing we’d like to become clear to anyone, everywhere it is that

Your representative

Works for you

and not the other way round

That having been said, a minor gripe here. It would be nice if newspapers checked their facts before they publish. Really.

  1. Ory is in fact a woman, and not a man as the story says
  2. Contrary to what the headline says, neither of us is in the United States, and we cannot imagine where the notion came from. One is not sure whether to be amused or annoyed at the notion that anything of substance must come from overseas

That last bit of disinformation forces me to now say, for the record, that I am NOT in the United States but am very much in Kenya. When I talk about events and issues in Kenya it is from first hand experience and not through proxy.

But as they say — publicity is publicity. If anything it will force us to up our game still more :)

Of Titles

President Kibaki has been at the coast over the weekend dishing out title deeds. Last week he was merrily doing this wearing a loud shirt that gave the impression to those who could not see him directly that he was wearing chain mail on a windy day.

Personally, I find the notion of  a President physically handing out title deeds a colossal waste of valuable time that could be better spent elsewhere.

Now, handling out title deeds, according to a distant relative who works for the Ministry of Lands, is clerical work for the most junior of officers. It is not like giving out a Doctorate.

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that Baba Jimmy is scoring political points.

Who’d have thought that impending elections would drive the legendary lethargy out of our Leader!

Gangsta Nation

There was a shootout last Sunday. There are generally shootouts at one point or another in this country, but this one was special because it took place right outside my back gate, on the road I use to get to Mi Casa.

It was equally more special because it took place 5 minutes before my whistling person was strolling down the road wondering where the heck everyone was and why there was a crowd further down the road.

Let’s just say the 4 carjackers are having their names looked for in the Book Of Life

Charity And The Snake Charmer

A very angry and very determined Health Minister Charity Ngilu led a large group of equally angry women to the doorstep of Security Minister John “Python” Michuki to demand an apology to slights made to the Kamba culture and the Kenyan Woman.

I did not watch the news in full yesterday but from the little I could deduce, he had somehow found more room in what is turning out to be an ample mouth to put his foot in, with some choice remarks to her about her reluctance to join NARC-Kenya.

That Charity objected strongly was very clear. As he slithered out the back door of his office it was clear what his views on Charity were. Charity may begin at home but he was quite willing to leave Charity behind.

Pic Of The Day

Whatever this guy is thinking, I doubt it is pure and pious!

Fao!Now to go to class, will comment later!Once again congrats on the mention!I am sure now more people know what you are doing.

  • http://www.kabinti.blogspot.com kabinti

Congrats on the mention and great work!

  • http://chondima.blogspot.com Sarah

Maad props on the publicity, the pic of the day is too reydi :-)

  • http://chrenyan.wordpress.com Chrenyan

Ah, you must be very busy. Was expecting a long and juicy post on the events of the jacking. Will make do with that.

What’s with the gent in the pic?

  • http://www.ciikuandhermess.blogspot.com Ciiku

    First,
Congratulations on the mention, but undoubtedly, you should have expected the lack of research, yes???

Second, can that storo of the jacking be given in more detail?? Scary stuff I tells you!

KIbaki and his shenanigans…. Damn shame if I was asked. And there is some person out there who has fallen for this “act” ….. this “parade”…. this utter stupidity

The pic… the dude looks like he is trying to hold it in….. or he let it out and he hopes by looking at her like that, she wont notice the odour……. lol….. but thats just me! :)

  • http://kadhat.blogspot.com egm

    Congrats on the mention.

    Pole about the jacking scare.

  • http://www.mentalacrobatics.com/think/ Mentalacrobatics

Congratulations on the noise and on the good work you are doing. Well in.

  • http://prousette.blogspot.com prousette

Once again congratulations on the good work you two are doing.

Are those title deeds worth the paper they are printed on? Because the fact that you have a piece of paper to say you own land does not mean you do own the land.

That guy has very holy :D thoughts, he’s on the verge of muttering Oh My God, as pious as it gets.

  • http://www.chezmamamia.com/blog Abby

Congrats on the mention. Keep up the good work.
I watched the news item on Charity, and IMHO the journalist covering the story used the expression “Hell hath no fury….” a tad out of context.

  • http://kenyananalyst.wordpress.com/ Kenyan Analyst

Congrats for the publicity. “…Book of Life..” LOL!

  • http://potashke.blogspot.com POTASH

Mhh… a lot of interesting dialogue going on online and it is really cool that the mainstream media has finally accepted the presence of alternative news sources online.
Congrats dude, didn’t know you were part of Mzalendo…
Apparently Ory was sounding me out on this maneno; unfortunately our schedules clashed last weekend.

  • jogoo wa shamba

    That makes a 5th infamy :))

I watched the news too. All i can say is that Charity was literally breathing fire and i think she had every right to.

@M- Of course Monsieur Le Rattle could find more room to put his foot in. have you forgotten that serpents have elastic mouths that can stretch to accomodate objects almost twice their size??

  • Luke

    Mr. Thinker Sir,
So happy you stressed the point you are NOT based overseas but right here in Kenya
A Sunday nation columnist last month raved and ranted about “kenyans in the diaspora being a noisy and opinionated lot….” who “politically are of no use to the presidential aspirants”
This notion that anything of substance can only come from overseas (or in this case NOT come from overseas) has been roundly disapproved, c/o you and kenyanpundit and many others
I guess Mr.Nation Columnist was right-well.except kenyans IN KENYA are also a noisy and opinionated lot-and ALL of them, whether home or abroad are of use to the political process@home
PS:-kenyans love for all things foreign knows no boundaries-case in point the Armenians

  • I

Wow.. i must say i very disappointed that it would be thougth that anything of substance comes from oversees.. that goes to show that voices of people in KENYA are not heard merely because they are not overseas.. but then i have to say this, if “brains” are said to be over seas, then the person uttering those words should look at themsevles being in KENYA and ask them selves, where that statement puts in them in the category of people with “brains” in Kenya..

I wonder if any politician (except, of course, H.E. Mtukufu Obamamoja) would ever dare to admit that he/she is working for the public – and not the other way round as you’ve correctly pointed it out. These guys are our representatives. Our speakers. Well, are they?

Also, I am curious to see how many female politicans will come up in future.

It’s nice to see Mzalendo being mentioned @ the DN. You both and all contributors are doing a wonderful job for the website – I also like how you fought for the release of the hansards! So please, tell me, how come the newspapers are full of unimportant stories every day and then it took them such a long time to copy & paste such a “flat” article on your wonderful work and publish it without researching any details? I remember the time i read it on Tuesday night, they even got the link to Ory’s site wrong (co instead of com). And any editor with access to the inet could have figured out that Ory is a Lady.

    M,

Kwanza… Congrats on the mention… You are sure getting your due!

Ahhh… I have a rant on my blog on these newspaper folk who DON’T do their research!
    http://vituvingisana.blogspot.com/2005/11/gaffes-on-reporting-financial-news.html

One more thing… Yes, I am using M’s blog to further my own aganeda!

I need to know more about Safaricom’s EDGE (the real deal not the sales pitch!)… Experiences, cost effectiveness, etc by the people for the people…
BTW, are the upload speeds good enough to use Skype (VOIP)?

If anyone can help, please leave comments on http://www.vituvingisana.blogspot.com

    Hey M,

Have u heard from the other M(utua)?

He might denounce you as unpatriotic coz you are washing/exposing the MPs dirty, er, filthy briefs (or undies, boxers, or none?) in public!

Kenyans don’t get the concept that public servants are well… servants of the public!

I recall some guy (regular mwananchi) who witnessed moi’s recent accident & wanted moi given more chase cars! I don’t know to laugh or cry!

I think the cartoon in the Standard (9 Sep 2006) is great! It illustrates the truth in Kenya…

  • http://www.brotherjero.blogspot.com BJ

Great picture, yup that guy is up to no good. Bush needs to keep special agents on the lookout… Hey how have you been, hit me for a special tribute on 9/11..

In the meantime be safe playa..

I’ve been away for a while but thought I should comment…
To the media and their opinions as to where intelligent thought can orignate-
“Ability and aptitude remain constant, it is the exercise of, or the practice of, the aforementioned that is controlled” (I would like to say/write this directly to them but I would hate to be the cause of countless breakdowns in our, otherwise, so informed and so involved press.) Remember, the press elected George ‘Dub-Duuh’ Bush (but I digress).

Remember, “For History to work, the legend must become fact. When the legend (what we are told happened) becomes fact, you must print the legend…making the legend fact! (e.g. (9/11, Iraq, the arms deal (Kenya) scandal, the land leasing, the dubious resigs, the missing billions, the re-naming of frauds to make them legit…I tire) Unfortunately, our elected politicians have learned these little facts of life and history(a little too well if you asked me)…on a side note, does anyone know if the mandatory reading list includes “Art of War” and “How to influence people”??

  • dreddlocked1

“if the mandatory reading list FOR MP’S includes…’

  • http://www.nmjoe.blogspot.com JOE

I dont mean to use this site as an instrument to shame members of parliament but a recent interview by the standard newspapers on Ms Adelina Mwau a kenyan member of parliament and Assistant minister for labour had me fumming in disgust Ms Mwau was last week on record as having said in a recent interview that when she hired her current female bodyguard, she had a few specifications that she required of the potential gaurd, including that an applicant should be a non smoker and a non “fanatical Christian”. This coming from the minister of labor.

In her own words practicing discrimination based on religious belief. How can a country like Kenya progress with such stupidity at the highest levels of government .The next thing you know the government will be recruiting Kenya airways pilots and asking for non Muslim applicants? If anything Ms Mwau should resign from government and keep off from the public. How can a minister in the Ministry of labor be on record as being a bigot and flaunting the fact that she discriminates against born again Christians in a country where labor laws specifically make it a crime to discrininate based of religion. It just makes me sick to see a country like Kenya run by people such as Ms Mwau. What message is she sending out to born again christians who work across kenya.what of the hundreds and indeed thousands of military and police officers christians and muslims who are committed to their faith .what message is she sending out to them.. the quality of some members of parliament both in government and in opposition is shocking and very saddening i hope through mzalendo Ms Mwau would like to set the record straight or resign
