Deliver Us From Paris

Posted June 28th, 2007 in Reflections by M

Following is the CNN.com home page as at 14:15 East African time.

Highlighted in red are stories that actually affect the price of tomatoes.

The proliferation of green are mentions of Paris Hilton.

Kinda gives you a sense of where our priorities lie, doesn’t it?

AOB

He he! Looks like I’m not the only one tired of these overused buzzwords!

AO AOB

It is unfortunate stories like these that leave me in little doubt it will be a cold day in hell, with flying swine, before America elects Barack Obama to be their president. Unless of course the votes are counted in Florida

PIC OF THE DAY

SPECIAL MENTION

Penmachine is a moving blog, from Derek, a guy who’s been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. With the blogosphere full of  smoke and mirrors about “the power of blogging” and “the cornflakes I ate for breakfast”, this one actually gives you some quite humbling food for thought.

All the best guy. Not quite sure what else to say.

The less said about Ms. Hilton, the better.

The buzzwords poll was commissioned by the Lulu Blooker Prize. Ouch

Jena shows the reality that is. Obama had better hope there’s a snow making machine that is effective in the fires of Hades.

Paris. *smh* even my niece is asking for get this…a puppy like Paris Hilton’s!!!!!! Yeah, that mongrel chihuahua she carries around. Smh, her mother looked at her and went “when we go to visit your grandparents, you can pick one of those neighborhood Jimmis loitering around. No one will even notice they are missing”
    Tihhiiiiiiiii.
She is all over. Kwanja si now me I watched a full feature of her on E! Was it E!? One of those celeb storos.
Wachaaaaaaa, I swear I was waiting for BBC news me…Okkkkkkaaaayyy, so I watched. So shoot me. Just do it. I can swear even Spidey watched. What? Me I will name names.

Enyewe lakini you…how have you been?

  • http://blog.mwalimu.com/ toiyoi

M, the fact that you write about her so often just goes to reinforce that your position about discussing her is wrong- i.e. if you think she gets too much publicity, why add to it.

But then again you have answered that same question in the cartoon picture of the day…. clever, eh?

  • http://mountkirima.blogspot.com Kirima

Funny how we are so all irritated by Paris but are still busy watching her on TV, reading about her and talking about her. I still insist she is famous for just being famous.

  • http://thehanyee.blogspot.com/ The.Hanyeé

Abhorrent to say the least! WTF is she famous again for? Being a socialite? And maybe being an billionaire hotel chain heiress? *seething*
Now we can all act slutty, say “thats hot” like a billion times, drink drive umpteen times and go to jail…this should be the ambition of every man, woman and child! NOT!!!

LOL at her trying to be deep with that “Dont serve the time..” quote. Nonsense! Hope she dropped the soap in the County Jail Shower (figuratively of course, hehe)

  • http://blog.uhuru.de JKE

The daughter of my cousin nicknamed her brain tumor “Paris Hilton”.

That pic of the day…am so tickled!
    Penmachine-so sorry.

When a porn star is interviewed by Larry King, then you know the world is hell bound

I went to CNN this morning and realized I am better off reading BBC. In a week or so, 100 more troops will have died in Iraq, 10,000 people in Darfur, 100 Palestinians, but the world will be more concerned whether Paris got her extenstions fixed same day she came back from Jail. What a world we live in

  • http://blog.mwalimu.com/ toiyoi

    @udi
So much for seeing the splinter in the others eyes. Lets ask yourself/ourselves instead ( assuming you are Kenyan) what have you done to help the plight of the Ogiek?

‘Highlighted in red are stories that actually affect the price of tomatoes’

    Lol!
    That’s just…
    It really is…
    I mean….

I watched a documentary on Jena. In disbelief I might add, when they tried to dismiss it as ‘kids just messing about’, to when, despite white on black and black on white assaults occurred, only blacks were put on trial. It gets better. Google the story of the black boy sentenced to 10 for engaging in consensual oral sex with a 15 year old girl. Or the 17 year old sentenced to life for a $2 robbery.

Barack, on the other hand, in my opinion, will fare well despite making comments like ‘White men cant clap’ or the fact that his middle name is ‘Hussein’ (did you ever see the badges from well wishing supporters that read ‘Its Obama not Osama?’. Bless). He has a certain je ne sais quoi. Whether Americans can see past his lack of experience is the real issue me thinks.

Ps – If you ever get a minute, watch this powerful documentary on race and discrimination – http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/divided/

Forget Paris Hilton, the Spice Girls are back!!

    The Spice Girls!!

    Hmm..Paris Hilton + Spice Girls = 6th Spice girl?

Imagine the possibilities!! Maybe even a Spice world 2!!

*runs off to subdue her goosebumps*

  • http://kadhat.blogspot.com egm

@DShy… I was reading about the boy sentenced for 10 years for the consensual sex with the girl. The argument being given against releasing him early was the fact that this would jeopardize other child molestation convictions. Total load of ….

And yup, the same paper had the Spice Girls reunion story. The line that caught my eye was one stating that the SG probably need each other more than the world needs them.

At this rate, there’ll be a goosebumps outbreak in the world!

  • http://blog.uhuru.de JKE

I hate to be posting youtube content, but this time…it’s for a good cause :-)

  • njege

@dshy – lol about spice girls comment.

cnn’s news is always suspect…even their list of top stories have a few glaring ommissions (and a few glaring inclusions) bit too much obsessed with eye-rack for a balanced overview of the world.

having said that, attraction of paris hilton is that her miniscule iq almost guarantees that there will be something self-destructive to watch.

  • http://gishungwa.blogspot.com Gishungwa

Betweeen Darfur+other world crisis and Paris sob sob stories why we would pick the latter ???

    Penmachine is humbling.

  • http://Nakeel.blogspot.com Nakeel

Gosh the media stinking all over. Tomato price affecting stories where did that come from.

  • http://chrenyan.wordpress.com/ Chrenyan

I must say Toiyoi’s broadside at Udi – no offence to Udi at all – had me in stitches!

This post is the first I’ve heard of Paris Hilton in weeks; I don’t read CNN – apart from the NBA news, which in the offseason I find less and less reason to visit especially after LeBron and Co’s NBA Finals collpase. I prefer BBC. Nor do I watch much TV. Any TV, to be honest. Seems I’m missing precious little.

This CNN-BBC thing is like The Apprentice (US) vs The Apprentice (UK). At least in Season I of Apprentice UK. Worlds of difference! I found The Apprentice (US) to be more like a serialised “The Donald Trump Show”.

  • http://Seasonsandreasons.blogspot.com Seasons and Reasons

I will not even mention Paris Hilton..Ooops!! already did.

The media the world over is such a let down..it maybe the reason we spend so much time in blogosphere..oh my that word again.

  • http://kadhat.blogspot.com egm

@Chrenyan, lucky you not to have to be exposed to some of this inanity. Like you, I don’t watch tv. But I work for GE which owns NBC, and so in the cafeteria you will find tvs on, so during lunch I have to endure Paris-mania as well as whatever-scandal-is-the-it-thing-of=the=day-mania. BBC sure provides loads more substance than CNN can only dream of.

  • http://mywordsonly.blogspot.com/ acolyte

Urgh CNN needs to go the same way as US Weekly and put Paris aside for a month or so.
As for Jena, the more things change the more they stay the same. what has happened with racism in the States is that it has simply mutated and become more hidden in most places but occasionaly it does flare up openly in small towns where white folk are the judge, jury and executioners. As for the law, it sure as hell isn’t colorblind! Even the statistics prove it! White and rich you get a slap on the wrist, black or brown, you’re going down!
Let’s keep it real here, many white folk just don’t see themselves as equal to black folk so they see nothing in subjugating them. After all even the U.S law at one time saw black folk as 2/3rds of a man. As for Obama, the States is more Red than it is Blue; that is why a git like Bush could make it into power and have so many fans even as he runs the country into the ground. Those are the people who will pull out all the stops and cash necessary to make sure Obama’s campaign for nomination ends even before it begins.
As for Spice Girls re-union, Lord Why!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
