Another Year
01
December
This morning as I was driving from a week-long conference I cast a jaundiced eye at the fare that was coming through Roberta’s speakers. Absolutely inane best describes some of the fare coming courtesy of our radio stations.
The first gentleman pleaded thus:
“Row the boat,
row the boat,
row the boat,
row the boat.Signal the plane,
signal the plane,
signal the plane,
signal the plane …”
He was followed in quick succession by another one telling me
“Big sh*t poppin,
and little sh*t stoppin,
big sh*t poppin,
and little sh*t stoppin,
big sh*t poppin,
and little sh*t stoppin …”
There was barely time for the radio to cool before there was another one
“Stuntin’ like my daddy,
stuntin’ like my daddy,
stuntin’ like my daddy,
stuntin’ like my daddy … “
Followed in quick succession by this gent
“Snap ya fingers! Do ya step!
You can do it all by yo self!
Let me see you do it! Ay!
Let me see you do it! Ay! … “
Wasting no time another son of his father stepped up
“I make it rain,
I make it rain on them …
I make it rain”
The lady who took to the stage next clearly objected to her predecessor making it rain
Now that it’s raining more than ever
Know that we still have each other
You can stand under my Umbrella
You can stand under my Umbrella
(Ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh)
As I chuckled to myself I remember thinking back some dozen or so (give or take) years ago when I was an unwilling and annoyed passenger in a Peugeot 504 en route to the grandparent’s, squirming at the torture of the “ancient and archaic” music my folks forced us to endure by playing the tapes in the car radio. Mbilia Bel and San Fan Tomas made me want to weep. Billy Joel, Eugene Wilde, Lionel Richie and James Brown were relics of yesteryear with tired, mundane and boring music.
I remember after a particularly bitter and eloquent appeal for something more up to date my folks gave me the old one two.
Mater: You know, when you grow older is when you’ll realize the value of this music, the instrumentation and the lyrics. Some of those things you listen to today …
Pater: Why am I arguing with a boy who thinks that limping like he has a jigger in one foot is “cool”?
{Note: My father, somehow can put quotes into his speech}
Well my wonderful parents, you were right. I’m not exactly sure when I crossed that bridge between youth and ” when you’re older”, but cross it I have.
Especially today, where x years ago (and x is an increasingly large number), unto us a child was born.
Special thanks to those who stayed up till midnight, promptly fell asleep and woke up later in a panic to wish me a happy birthday
This means YOU.
Thanks to those who have sent me best wishes. (Sam, Njeri, Joze and others I’m too tired to type
)
Thanks to my lads and lasses at work who dragged me from a conference in the middle of nowhere to present me with large quantities of delicious cake. I was profoundly touched.
And most thanks to my folks. Reviewing what I’ve accomplished so far, especially in the last couple of years … you’ve done something right.

I agree and we really can’t blame folks for just wanting to download singles for .99 as opposed to buying an entire album. Why bother? They really don’t need the other 16 tracks on the CD. They are just filler anyway.
I’m not sure who is at most fault - the artist, the record label or the media - but this whole notion that it is acceptable to deliver an album that is only digestible in small dosages is annoying.

Looking x years ago (where x is an increasingly large number) at Michael Jackson’s Album, Thiller had just nine songs on it.
Of those nine songs, seven reached the top 10. If you break down those seven top 10 tracks, five entered the top five, two of which even hit number one. Talk about getting your money’s worth.
Soulja Boy has been the most searched artist for more than two months, but doesn’t the Superman craze stop with “Crank That”?
I am not comparing the artistry of Michael to that of Soulja Boy. I’m just making the point that there is a major difference between the music crazes that consumes ppl today and 25 years ago.

I woke up today and it occurred to me it was Dec 1st (notwithstanding that it was Nov 30th yesterday - another story) and the first thought was ‘Oh NO, its M’s birthday’ LOL, and Guess my second pit stop?
Do not ask the first
Right here.
Happy Birthday sweetie - all the blessings that can come your way are sent your way.
Now, I keep saying that if I hear that Soulja Boy song again, there will be homicide.
With you on the music choice - you know

Happy birthday M!!! If I knew your number, even me I’d have called you he he he.
I’m also sad to say that I’ve crossed that damn bridge and belong firmly to the ‘older’ crew. *sigh*. I take comfort in the fact that you too were subjected to the folks music (ingalau I got Charlie Pride too!).
(And will you like me still if I say I totally rocked to Mbilia Bel “Twende Nairobi….”)

Happy belated birthday M.
May you live a long and healthy life.
I heard someone say on radio that the umbrella song is her favorite of all the ones she has ever listened to in her 20+ years. Wonders never cease.

Happy Birthday (yeah, for the umpteenth time). You are. The wind beneath my wings.

Thinkersroom is now a lil cobwebbed…some cracks showing through that definitely need some filler and a fresh coat of paint. A leaking roof. Bad plumbing. Creaking doors…windows letting in air..or letting out air…and we are talkin bout the building
Age is so cruel on a building.
HAPPY BDAY M!!!

hey, i like the umbrella song. and the video.
i think u get extra points if you make a likeable song with a nonsensical phrase. nelly is king in this…songs about his grillz, shoes and my personal favorite, the song about the ambient temperature of the room

How sad (who cares anyway at my wining?) that we ( mostly our youth ) cut and paste stuff (even pure crap ) from western nations, without thinking the origins or consequences of em pasted stuff?
Case in point: AA have 90% broken families and 95% male AA have no light at the end of the tunnel; They sing their misery, hate, bitterness, self -loath, and we take it all in, thinking it is cool.

Happy belated big one, M! You do know that dirty washes can be postponed, right?
My bro has Soulja Boy on repeat for half the day on the loudest volume possible. I googled the lyrics and what I found was simply amazing.

Soulja Boy? What happened to cool names like “Wam, Air Fiesta Matata, Bjork”?
@M
For the first time in a very very long time I was completely clueless as to what you were talking about.
@Eclipse
There is a group called Soulja Boy and another called Soulja Girl?
No. I will not google for them.
@M
I miss your comments on comments. (Hope that makes sense). And HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY.

came across this and LMAO to infinity
“Soulja Boy has also come under criticism for his sexual innuendo of “Superman dat hoe” which is defined by Urban Dictionary as “when you ejaculate on a girls back then put a blanket on her so when she stands up the blanket sticks therefore making her look like she has a cape.”

A belated happy birthday! I have ranted and raved about the state of music for so long that I won’t start here.
Let’s just say that is why I happily download music because given today’s quality half of it ends up in my recycle bin.
As for Batman, those rumors have been floating around for a long time. A grown man and a young boy running around in tights who live together in a big house with an elderly man. Hmmmmmmmm………….

M, am surprised you still listen to radio, with all those several hundred gigs of mp3s you have.
