Hollywood Is Stunting Our Brains

Posted March 1st, 2010 in Reflections by M

Some months ago while watching one of the innumerable series on TV I reached a conclusion that startled even myself.

"This is complete and utter bullshit."

One hour after watching the series I did an audit of how exactly I had benefited and came away with a net loss on the balance sheet, as I had lost an hour of my valuable time and gained absolutely nothing.

As time progressed that echo became an old friend while watching credits scrolling and I started to ponder and reflect: is there any value that many of the TV programs add?

Now, I am not going to say that we should be watching documentaries of isotopic uranium and nuclear fission 24 hours a day, but I KNOW for a fact that there has to be a line between entertainment and nonsense.

The fact of the matter is that we are being flooded with mind numbing fare masquerading as television programming that is slowly but surely doing its bit hand over fist to reduce us to a crowd of balling simpletons.

Look for instance to the proliferation of so called ‘reality series’. One is amazed at their sheer number. Ranging from isolation in remote places (Survivor), to job interviews (The Apprentice) to Cooking (Top Chef) and ultimately the nails across the blackboard, the ‘dating’ (The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, et al). Not to mention the amorphous Big Brother. There are undoubtedly a dozen other of these mind numbing fare i get a headache trying to think of others.

I won’t dignify soaps by addressing them here.

As if they were not enough, there are spin-offs of the same. So there is The Apprentice, the Apprentice UK and Celebrity Apprentice, all of which consume 40-50 minutes of viewing time.

Two years ago in the course of conversation my mother asked me why I watched Big Brother. I can’t remember exactly what I answered but I certainly remember floundering for several seconds trying to find an answer.

Last year I asked myself thus: Big Brother is a program about 20+ people in a house. Do I have 96 minutes, let alone 96 days to keep track of these people who I don’t know from Adam? The answer will come as no surprise and I spend those 96 days in blissful ignorance of the events in the house. I fondly believe I am not worse off.

This Saturday I watched a promotion of a Bachelor type program whose twist was the Bachelor was to select his partner specifically from a series of plus sized women. Er. Yes.

I unfortunately watched one episode of The Apprentice Martha Stewart where the challenge was to design and cook some sort of soup.

How this got approved, much less aired leaves one speechless. I fell into a coma and came to after 48 hours as my brain protested the abuse.

The novelty of series has worn off as well. It is a foregone conclusion that there will always be 5 or so twists of the tale in every episode of Lost.

You no longer need to watch 24 to know that Jack Bauer will kill everybody. Terrorists, bosses, colleagues, criminals.

Not only will there will always be a new quest in Heroes, but at the end everyone will probably either  turn out to have been bad guys all along or related.

I stopped watching Prison Break when after 4 or so series the bloody fellows were still in prison

Are you noticing even after 7 or 8 seasons it’s the same stuff? Absolutely nothing new! Same plots. Same plot devices. And these were for the interesting series. What about absolute corkers like this one? I got a headache just watching the synopsis.

Hollywood has realized that like sheep we’ll watch whatever muppetry they shove down our throats and so were are treated to a constellation of nonsense that leave us unable to mentally hit the water if we fell out of a boat.

We are not spared when it comes to movies.

It seems 9 out of every 10 movies are ‘romantic comedies’ that are neither romantic nor funny. If yon managed to finish watching All About Steve with Sandra Bullock you know what I mean.

Of the remaining 10% of movies, half of these are POORLY, and I do mean poorly, executed remakes of classics. Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen I’m looking at you! And if anyone watched the original Pink Panther with Peter Sellers, the monstrosity that Steve Martin poorly made with Beyonce, (BEYONCE for Goodness’ sake)! will be quite apparent. And the less said about G.I. Joe the better.

I have simply decided to be more discerning of what I watch. Currently the only series I find worth watching are

Spartacus: Blood & Sand – Gripping stuff. Story, cinematography

Hustle – Geniuses are writing this

Leverage – Not a bad effort at all at imitating Hustle, but the black guy’s comments are just too cliche

Dexter – A bit too dark for many. Definitely an acquired taste.

Top Gear – No explanation necessary

Otherwise I spend my time on History, Discovery Channel & BBC Knowledge.

As a result of these cuts I have noticed availability of time to do other things an increase in my IQ!

Moral: Conserve your few remaining brain cells. Mind what you watch!

PIC OF THE DAY

True dat BUT the majority have the option of watching shows on BBC (the good stuff) or PBS (for those who live in the USA) or channels like the History or Discovery channel…

But folks watch The Bachelor (& itinerations) so what do you expect Producers to do?

People where perfectly happy before the Bacherlor showed up. Now the producers are shovelling this crap down our throats. My assertion is that people watch it because it is there

Sorta why tabloids have a market… who cares about the love lives of A-B-C-D-list ‘stars’? Many, many, many do… Makes little sense to me but they do…

Incredibly there is an entire channel for this sort of monotony

And as Kenyans, we do to… Esther Arunga, anyone? So what if the girl has gone gone off her rocker… why should 99.9999% of Kenyans care? Oh, but the media had a field day with her while kibaki & friends were fiddling with my hard-earned ‘taxes’…

Let the media do what the media does. At the end of the day you are the decision make of what to watch an what to ignore. Make the decision wisely

    I couldn’t agree more.

The last time I watched a movie and felt it was worth my money was The Lord of the Rings movies. Since then I think I’ve watched probably 3 movies big screen. You go hoping that maybe, just maybe this time it’ll be worth your while and money, but mostly you’re just disappointed. I don’t keep a TV so can’t rate the stuff there…

However I wouldn’t blame it on Hollywood. These guys assiduously collect data on ratings, etc. The series and movies are there, as Coldtusker says, because people want to watch them. I think there’s a bit of the cart and the horse here… Do silly people watch these series or do the series make people silly?

But we grew up in an era without Prison Break and The Apprentice, and would have continued on blissfully without them. I doubt there was demand until there was a supply
  • kellie

I’m with the readers above. It’s all in the ratings.

I think it’s a chicken egg, and I’m inclined to think the chicken came first – Hollywood

I can proudly say I don’t watch any of the ‘guilty’ shows above, though I’ve watched The Apprentice quite a bit.

Leverage is awesome, Dexter was too dark for me.

One thing I have discovered over time is that TV watching is in fact less relaxing than taking a jog, or reading a book.

  • kellie

Oh. I watch 24 and a number of other silly Series and comedies. Liking the new design.

Let I be lynched here I never said that 24 was silly. But having watched seasons 1 to 7 I have a pretty strong suspicion that the same twists, turns and devices will be employed in Season 8. Do I want to spend 24 hours watching essentially the same stuff? Or is Season 8 different? Does Jack fail to save the US/World?
  • The Hanyeé

Dude, I was thinking about this over the past weekend. Funny enough, my angst was brought about when a TV channel here decided to air originals vs remakes this weekend…it was Pink Panther (Peter Sellers) and Pink Panther (Steve Martin). I almost don’t have a TV anymore after the Steve Martin one showed…

Totally feel you dude. In fact nowadays if I want to watch a good movie I try TCM first. They don’t make movies like North Of North West anymore!
  • kellie

Actually, I once compared 24 to The Bold and The Beautiful. No matter how many seasons you miss, you catch up in one episode. I watched Season 1, then jumped to 7. Season 8 is just like Season 1.

    You’re right.

  • Mots

I stopped watching 24 and Prison Break at season 2, never watched an episode of Lost, tried a few episodes of Heroes

You forgot other crappy shows like Desperate Housewives, WWE, Burn Notice, House, Desperate Housewives, One Tree Hill, 90210, Knight Rider (OMG!)

A few shows escaped my filter: 30 Rock, The Office, Sopranos, Family Guy, Breakin Bad, Air Crash Investigation

Solution: get a good game console with some serious games and you will never go back to some crapy tv shows

Dude, Knight Rider has got to be one of the worst remakes in history!
  • msaniixl

I agree with everything, almost, even 24 which is they only show i watch on network tv..is the same, hope they can it after this season. For the movies its slim pickings as well.

I disagree with you on Spartcus , the 300 motif is overdone, green screen, especially the slow mo shots, the way the blood spatters (and someone still lives *smirk*), the language they use is curious and were those people cursing that much?? (i have no problem with cursing btw) its just for period piece it does not feel like one, the language they use seems to me well, very 90′s. The nudity is also weird…, the actual spartcus story is very intriguing the numbskulls behind this did not put any effort in telling THAT story, instead they decide to merge gladiator with 300.

I was waiting for someone to critique Spartacus. Absolutely true what you say. But compared to the standard fare in the tube it is different. No doubt we’ll get used to it in the end (as we did with Rome) and they will see the sense to finish it at season 2 or 3 and not prolong it like 24
  • Erick

Speaking of 24 versus “The Bold and The Beautiful”, Season 8 shows a “softer” side of Jack Bauer. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing, his Terminator-esque persistence is my personal preference.

This I have to see. there is a softer Jack Bauer? Does he talk about his feelings? Buy Valentine cards?

Drat! There goes my draft post. Are you reading my mind, M? Liking the new look though, very fresh and less cluttered than the previous one.

Been meaning to write it for a while. Yes, the new theme is much friendlier on the eye

I discontinued my DSTV subscription and discovered I only miss Natgeo and the other documentary channels. After all I always catch the sports in the pub or other social areas.

I’m glad you didn’t even bother with the soaps you can imagine my angst with NTV which debuted THREE whole spanish telenovelas in one week thats just total insanity! Boston Legal is the only program I watch on NTV nowadays
There are a few good movies coming out but I agree remakes generally suck!

Wish it was easy to spot these lemons early. Even trailers & reviews nowadays are deceptive!
  • http://savvy.blog.butterfly.co.ke/blog savvy

You’ve just reminded me how the last movie I watched sucked! Don’t bother watching “It’s Complicated” on big screen.

    Duly noted!
  • Erick

    You asked:
This I have to see. there is a softer Jack Bauer? Does he talk about his feelings? Buy Valentine cards?

    **SPOILER-ISH ALERT**

Ati Valentine cards :-) . No, but he wants to spend more time with his family (daughter and grand-daughter), and he’s not so stone-faced in the field with a certain female agent (who will remain nameless for now).

Oh, I will spare you a long-ass reply but if I say 24 is really driving me crazy this season, I, the dyed in the wool 24 groupie, you best believe it is predictable. Seriously – if you see ‘the hair’ – you will know what I am talking about in due time – it feels like they ran out of ideas and regurgitated the old ones, some not even feasible (yes, I am aware it is TV, it is 24, it is fiction).
Love Dexter, and Leverage is hilarious.
And I too do not watch much TV any more, and the movies – not even gonna touch those – though I loved District 9 for obvious reasons (runs off before I have to explain myself) :D

  • farmgal

tempted to stop watching the gilmore girls …

Ha ha! Those women never shut up. They say more in one episode than Jack Bauer does in a whole season!
  • vic

ever watch “the wire” best tv show hands down its too real.

    Yeah, the Wire was brilliant
  • http://nichgich.blogspot.com Couch Tato

    Dexter was super!
Lost season 6…don’t get me started. This is a show that keeps re-inventing itself. They had lost it a while in season 3 but they tightened all those storylines and this is just great.
Spartacus..i think is also great it is what Rome was two years ago!
Hustle and Leverage are ok…you should try Lie to Me as well. Its different

  • http://nichgich.blogspot.com Couch Tato

@ Vic the same team that brought you the wire has a new show coming out ”Tream” Look out for that

forgot to add Breaking Bad is also totally different and grand.
On the sitcom front..Modern Family, Family Guy and 30 Rock are the best things out there.

Jack Bauer: yes there is a softer mellower side to him since season 7. I think they are trying to reduce his superman-ness and make him a bit human (cue in Brandy’s I’m only Human)i even thought they were creating a Jane Bauer last two seasons.

Again I REPEAT! LOST LOST LOST. currently the thing that has me hooked is the fact I HAVE NO IDEA what’s been happening the past 2 seasons…which makes you wonder do we know what happened since season1

OH ”Flashforward” shows great promise! i hope the writers know what to do with it and where to take it!

  • http://nichgich.blogspot.com Couch Tato

oh and if you are wondeirng yes i am stalking you and this post!

I forgot SONS OF ANARCHY. the same writing team that brought THE SHIELD! Its delicious!

I feel like I have been told off. This was too funny and yet true.Grey’s Anatomy was not mentioned so I might keep the telly.

  • http://www.ciikuandhermess.wordpress.com Ciiku

Of all the shows you mentioned, I dont even watch ONE… he he… Never even watched 1 episode of 24.

I must say that I think Big Bang Theory and 30 Rock are awesome!

And I am a House fan!

    Yay for Top Gear!

  • http://www.ciikuandhermess.wordpress.com Ciiku

And LOL @ the Twilight Comixed

  • Gundan

Haha, good one…anyway, seems the majority of people like their brains numbed though… bahhh sheep :-)

Though ‘Hustle’ is exciting, many episodes have plot holes you could drive a Hummer through. It’s good fun, but not never that serious.

  • http://dreamsoflit.blogspot.com Literary Dreamer

In the midst of the Seattle International Film Festival, I have to say that there are great movies out there, but the reason most people don’t watch them is because most people have decided that they don’t want to THINK when it comes to things they do for fun.

That doesn’t excuse the crap that is playing on TV and at cineplexes, though. There are plenty of great “genre” movies that one could watch instead of, say, Sex and the City 2, or bad rom-coms. As for TV, basic cable and cable TV are putting out some really great shows, and I love watching The Mentalist,/i> and House (when I have some free time) on the network stations. In addition, there are great TV shows from other countries that one can find through Netflix or even (occasionally) on Youtube.

I guess the silver lining in all this, in addition to the fact that there are still some great shows on television and some great movies in theaters, is that popular fare doesn’t last long in the audience’s consciousness, whereas works of art do.

I must admit i had quite a good laugh reading this article and how right you’re. Can’t fathom the thought of sitting still to watch some of the shows you mentioned above but i will watch 30s Rock, Hustle, Dexter and Criminal Intent. I haven’t seen an episode of Spartacus to offer any insight. For the films, i have decided my enthusiasm could be better utilized on watching Indie films and ignore the big budget movies that Hollywood is currently spewing because lets face it they’re going to be complete garbage. And as though that isn’t enough everything is suddenly being made in 3D. Why can’t they understand that they loose the whole essence of the film by doing so and what was so wrong with 2D? I could go on and on about this but am just going to be more frustrated so will quit while i still have my sanity intact!
